You might have seen a significant presence by the fire department at the Hilton in Saskatoon on Sunday afternoon as well as traffic restrictions while firefighters responded to a chemical call.
The call came in from 1st Avenue and 22nd Street at 2:47 p.m. reporting that two incompatible chemicals were mixed together in the boiler room of the hotel. Three people were not feeling well but were not exhibiting breathing or life-threatening symptoms.
The Saskatoon Fire Department shut down the lobby, boiler room and pool area but left the remainder of the hotel open to guests and visitors.
Three people went to hospital, two by ambulance and one person made their own way.
The two chemicals were determined to be muriatic acid and sodium chloride. At 4:52 p.m., the chemicals were contained and removed from the building. A disposal company took the chemicals from fire crews for safe handling and disposal.
Fire crews checked air quality continually during the incident. At 5:14 p.m., the restricted areas were opened, and the building was turned over to the hotel management.
