Fundraising continues for Martensville’s new Community Recreation Facility, even after the announcement that the federal government would be adding $17.8-million to the pot and the provincial government is funding $14.8-million. The City of Martensville has dedicated $11.8-million. Spokesperson for the volunteer fundraising group called the Martensville Community Recreation Project says they have raised over $1.7-million toward the project.
Jesse Reis adds that construction of the building is one thing, but it will also need to be equipped. Because funding from the federal and provincial governments was contingent on it being shovel-ready, Reis says the work is set to begin and some of the building materials are already on site.
Reis believes fundraising for this project has brought the community together, working toward a common goal, and he is impressed with how many individuals, families, organizations and businesses have supported their efforts, attending events and adding their donations. The volunteer fundraising group has been working on this project for about eight years.
Along with a regulation-sized ice rink and leisure ice surface there will be an indoor artificial turf facility, an indoor rock climbing wall and a playground, along with multi-purpose rooms and concession areas. The tentative opening date is September of 2024.
