The Prime Minister spent several hours on the James Smith Cree Nation on Monday, where the healing continues following the stabbing deaths of 11 people on September 4th. Another 18 were injured in the attack by Myles Sanderson who was captured a few days later and died shortly after in police custody.
Justin Trudeau went to the cemetery where 7 of the 11 people who died are buried. He left gifts of tobacco and made the sign of the cross at each of the graves.
Following meetings with indigenous leaders, Trudeau committed funds for a new healing centre on the James Smith Cree Nation.
$40-million dollars over six years is being committed to the healing centre at the James Smith Cree Nation. Chief Robert Head is with the Peter Chapman First Nation.
Another $2.5 million over five years will go to holistic treatment and healing services on the James Smith Cree Nation.
The federal government will also invest over $20 million toward Indigenous-led community safety projects in First Nations across the country, while promising continued work toward making Indigenous policing an essential service in Canada.
