There is a new design this year for Green Shirt Day, which is today, April 7th, one day after the Anniversary of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash.
Green Shirt Day is when everyone is invited to wear a green shirt in recognition of organ and tissue donation and bring awareness in honour of Logan Boulet of the Humboldt Broncos.
He was one of 16 victims in the crash which occurred on April 6th, 2018, and had registered to become an organ donor.
The design of the new shirt includes the hashtag #LoganBouletEffect. That phrase was coined when Logan Boulet’s parents decided to donate his organs. The decision, in the face of great tragedy, inspired 150,000 Canadians to register as organ donors.
According to greenshirtday.ca the design also includes 29 gold stars, 16 for each of those who lost their lives and 13 for those injured and whose lives were forever changed when the Humboldt Bronco Bus was hit by a semi. The tractor trailer did not yield at a flashing stop sign at the intersection of Highways 35 and 335 approximately halfway between Nipawin and Tisdale.
The 5-Year design was created by Brandy Hehn, a two-time organ transplant recipient having received her liver in 2009 from a deceased donor in Alberta and her kidney from a deceased Saskatchewan donor, in 2020. One organ donor can save up to eight lives and one tissue donor can help 75 people. Anyone 16 and older can register as an organ and tissue donor online.
