All of Saskatchewan will be hot through the weekend, but the northwest will see the greatest difference between their average temperatures and the heat they will experience into early next week. Some forecasters are calling the heat wave in British Columbia, Alberta and the western edge of northern Saskatchewan a heat dome, but Environment Canada meteorologist Terri Lang says that is not an official term, and they don’t use it because it can scare people.
Northwest Saskatchewan in the Meadow Lake, Buffalo Narrows and La Loche areas will have the highest rise of temperatures above average, but across the province it will also be hotter than usual for this time of year, and no rain is in the forecast except in the southeast.
Lang says high temperatures and low humidity is a bad recipe for grass fires. She urges everyone to be vigilant about ignition sources like cigarette butts and outdoor fires. Farm machinery and sparks from trains can also cause fires.
Because this is early for these summer-like temperatures, Lang advises to not overdo it outside. Take breaks from the sun and drink lots of water.
