Wayne Rodger of the Saskatoon Fire Department has some tips to be safe when decorating and celebrating this holiday season.
The assistant fire chief says for those who prefer having a real tree for Christmas, make sure it’s freshly cut and that you put it in water.
Rodger says if there’s no water, the tree will dry out and it will become that more combustible.
“keeping water in the bottom of the tree, topped up at all times is really beneficial.” He also has some tips when it comes to storing and using candles.
“Be respectful of it and make sure that they’re in a proper container and away from anything that’s combustible, an keep them supervised at all times.”
Rodger says make you don’t leave candles burning if you leave the room or your home.
Another tip for a safe holiday season is to ensure the lights you’re putting on your tree don’t have any wires that are frayed.
The assistant fire chief reminds residents to be mindful of heat sources when unwrapping gifts on the 25th and to keep an eye on your wood burning fireplace if you are using it through the holidays.
