If you notice a red ribbon tied onto a car, purse, keychain, or backpack, there is a good chance it is part of MADD Saskatoon’s Project Red Ribbon Holiday Awareness Campaign. For the last 36 years, Mothers Against Drunk Driving has run the project, with an aim to discourage the public from getting into the driver’s seat while intoxicated. Craig Stevenson with MADD lost his son Quinn to an impaired driver in 2013. He explains that even something as small as a ribbon can serve as a huge reminder to not drive while drunk or high.
“Every red ribbon tied on a vehicle, keychain, purse briefcase or backpack means one person who has made the commitment to not drive impaired. This campaign is one more way to bring our province closer to eliminating impaired driving,” Stevenson announced.
Saskatoon Police Chief Troy Cooper says 191 people have been charged for impaired driving so far this year in Saskatoon. He adds that although police enforce the rules against impaired driving every day, education is equally as important in achieving progress. Cooper emphasized the importance of planning a safe ride home and calling 9-1-1 to report impaired drivers, as it could prevent unnecessary harm, and possibly death.
From November 1st until January 8th, local landmarks, government buildings, and municipal buildings will be lit up in red to show support for the campaign.
