The Canadian National Women’s Hockey Team embraced the survival energy and magic of SaskTel Centre just in the nick of time Wednesday and, as a result, still have a chance to win the Rivalry Series after doubling the arch-rival United States 4-2.
The Canadians scored three unanswered goals in the third period in front of 8,459 fans – many of whom were young girls with dreams of emulating their heroes, most notably forwards and Saskatoon products Emily Clark and Sophie Shirley. Veteran blueliner Renata Fast notched the winning tally with just under six minutes remaining in regulation time, paring the U-S’s lead in the Rivalry Series to 3-2 with Game 6 Friday in Regina and Game 7 Sunday in St. Paul, Minnesota. Canada is trying for a repeat of last year when they fell behind 3-0 to the Americans in the Rivalry Series, only to win the next four. SaskTel Centre was witness to a similar comeback last spring when the W-H-L’s Saskatoon Blades rallied from a 3-0 second round series deficit, winning a Game 5 at home on the way to a reverse sweep of Red Deer. Briane Jenner, Ashton Bell and Laura Stacy also scored for Canada, who out-shot the U-S 28-16 – a stat that was in keeping with the territorial edge in play that the Canadians had. Following are post-game media scrums with Fast, Clark, Shirley, Canadian assistant coach Kori Cheverie, Canadian captain Marie-Philip Poulin, Canadian goaltender Ann-Renee Desbiens and Team United States head coach John Wroblewski…..
