Spiritwood Stockyards has been fined $325,000 from two separate incidents leading to a fatality and an injury. The Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety reports that on November 11th of 2021, a worker was struck by a gate and seriously injured while attempting to load bulls onto a trailer. Then January 26th of 2022, a worker died when he was attempting to clear snow off a roof and fell through a fibreglass skylight.
Spiritwood Stockyards was fined for not providing industrial protective headwear and requiring the worker to use it, resulting in a serious injury and for failing to ensure workers use a fall protection system where a worker could fall three metres or more, or if there is a possibility of injury if a worker falls less than three metres, resulting in death. The fine was just over $232,000 and the surcharge was almost $92,900.
