The spring Legislative Assembly of the Metis Nation-Saskatchewan (MN-S) culminated Monday with the signing of a self-government agreement that is described by MN-S as a modern treaty being negotiated with Canada.
According to Metis Nation-Saskatchewan negotiations with the federal government have progressed positively. In a news release MN-S says the agreement will constitutionally protect the right of self-government of the Metis in Saskatchewan, recognizing its jurisdiction over core governance matters.
MN-S president Glen McCallum says the agreement is what they have been fighting for, for 150 years and it is one more important step closer to fully realizing their inherent right to self-government.
MN-S will call on its citizens to ratify the agreement, or Kischi mashinahikan ooschi Michif – the Sacred Document of the Michif, this fall. They anticipate federal implementation of the legislation in early 2025.
