First there was one, now there are three officially announced candidates to be Saskatoon’s Mayor. There had been speculation and now it has officially been confirmed that MLA Gordon Wyant, who announced earlier he wouldn’t be running again in provincial politics, is now vying to become Saskatoon’s next Mayor. Councillor Cynthia Block has also put her name in the hat earlier this spring Cary Tarasoff was the first to announce his candidacy.
Prior to Wyant’s 14 years as an MLA, he was a city councillor for Ward 5 for seven years and previous to that was the chair of Saskatoon Public Schools for two years.
Wyant says the current council hasn’t been transparent. As well, he believes the tax increases are not sustainable and there needs to be some work done on how the City of Saskatoon’s budgets are set.
Cynthia Block, who has represented Ward 6 for eight years, says her priorities as Mayor include properly funding basic infrastructure, addressing safety, housing affordability, and creating a mayoral task force on homelessness.
Cary Tarasoff calls himself an active and engaged citizen with real world experience. He also ran for Mayor in 2020. Tarasoff says his focus is to get the city’s debt under control instead of adding wishlist projects.
Civic elections for cities and towns and for school boards in Saskatchewan are November 13.
