February isn’t usually a busy month for business at The Flag Shop in Saskatoon, but that hasn’t been the case this year.
The Flag Shop’s owner, Judy Denham, says over the last three days, Canadian flag sales have been climbing high.
Denham attributes the spike in sales to a call to action from five former Prime Ministers on Tuesday. Joe Clark, Kim Campbell, Jean Chrétien, Paul Martin and Stephen Harper released a joint letter asking Canadians to proudly fly the country’s flag on Saturday.
“The former prime ministers made their statement on Tuesday during the day sometime, and Wednesday all of the sudden the phone was ringing, and people were coming in the store. And for February, that’s a rare thing.”
Denham says February 15th is Flag Day, however this year, the symbol of Canadian pride holds a bit more meaning amid U.S. President Donald Trump’s potential tariffs and threats to make Canada the 51st state.
“Canadians, we’re all watching what’s happening in our country and to the south. We’ve decided it’s time for Canadians to stand proud and tall and show that we are Canadians, and we plan to stay that way.”
She addresses a question that has become more common in recent weeks, “Are they Canadian made?”
“Yes,” she assures. “We do have Canadian-made flags. We also have some overseas flags, but if you’re adamant that you want Canadian-made flags, we definitely have them.”
For anyone wanting to purchase a flag, Denham says The Flag Shop has Canadian flags of all sizes in stock, as well as pins, stickers, pens and more.
